A história começa com um jovem poeta e pastor chamado Kaldi. Um dia, suas cabras fugiram para um bosque desconhecido, e ao se aproximar, ficou boquiaberto ao vê-las dançando e dando chifradas umas nas outras.
Elas estavam mastigando folhas verdes brilhantes e frutos vermelhos de uma árvore que nunca tinha visto antes. Após experimentar as folhas amargas e os frutinhos doces, Kaldi sentiu um formigamento lento percorrendo todo o seu corpo!
Como resultado do consumo de cafeína, ele ficou cheio de energia e inspiração para compor poesias e cantigas. Compartilhando sua descoberta com o pai, a notícia se espalhou rapidamente e como resultado, o café se tornou parte integrante da cultura etíope.
